Can-Am Off-Road Motorcycles

The Can-Am brand has been in existence since the 1960s. It is a subsidiary of Bombardier Recreational Products, a Canadian company that also manufactures all-terrain vehicles under the Can-Am Off-Road brand. Founded in 1967, Can-Am was led by American Gary Robison, who designed the first motorcycles. The first models used Rotax engines, and the company recruited Jeff Smith to test prototypes and begin a race program. In 1971, the Can-Am Spyder was launched, and the series started in 1976.


The Can-Am brand quickly gained popularity in the off-road motorcycling scene. The first Can-Am machines were swept in the AMA 250cc motocross national championship, and Can-Am riders went on to win the 1975 AMA enduro national championship. In addition, the Can-Am team’s Skip Olson was the first to sweep an AMA 250cc motocross national title. The MX3 surpassed the MX1 in horsepower, coming in second place to Dick Burleson.

The Can-Am brand has been a part of American motorcycling for more than 50 years, and has helped propel American sport cycling to the top of the global stage. The Rotax engine was the first to be adapted for the Can-Am’s high power output. The Rotax engine was modified for the MX models, resulting in a more powerful and efficient motor. The company was known for its high horsepower, which earned it a reputation for high performance.

The CanAm Association was a non-profit organization. Its members were not a part of the United States military. But they were able to raise the profile of the brand. Its name sparked a controversy.
